Hands-down, "Channel" is the best example of the 3D-paper-cut-out effect I've been trying to capture with paint and resin layered paintings. Channel started out three years ago as a single layer, ship-caught-in-a-storm painting that I named "Heartbreak" ... I wasn't happy with it so I ended up painting a large open-mouthed angler fish dangling a mermaid in front of the ship and renamed it "Siren Call" ... Still not happy with it, I splash-painted over the fish and mermaid, leaving the ship to float in what was now a deep water channel. I thought it was done until I was taking a photo of it for the gallery when the overhead light reflected in the resin. That reflection made me add the moon. Sometimes it takes years to get the simplest painting perfect. |
