The streetlight outside my bedroom window strikes a koi pond that I painted last year and the shadows always remind me of kabuki masks. Perhaps that is why I wanted to start adding a little dimension to what my paintings share in the dark. With that in mind, I've been having some fun with glow-in-the-dark paint. In fact, most of my paintings from the last six months have a touch of the glow on them somewhere. Maybe it's in the stars, or the shape of water, or perhaps in the trees that seem to have a bit of moonlight ghosting them.
But this... this little guy has captured my heart. The painting was almost accidental. He certainly was. I found a tiny paint splash on my table that looked sort of fishy... I realized it was glow-in-the-dark paint - I added a bit of dimension, and this beautiful blue canvas became all about him. And after reading about Sudan, the world's last white northern rhino who died, (and being extremely concerned about the glaciers disappearing in my home state Alaska), the painting suddenly clicked.
Poor little guy...
