Channel

Hands-down, "Channel" is the best example of the 3D-paper-cut-out effect I've been trying to capture with paint and resin layered paintings.

Channel started out three years ago as a single layer, ship-caught-in-a-storm painting that I named "Heartbreak" ... I wasn't happy with it so I ended up painting a large open-mouthed angler fish dangling a mermaid in front of the ship and renamed it "Siren Call" ... Still not happy with it, I splash-painted over the fish and mermaid, leaving the ship to float in what was now a deep water channel. I thought it was done until I was taking a photo of it for the gallery when the overhead light reflected in the resin. That reflection made me add the moon.

Sometimes it takes years to get the simplest painting perfect.

Camouflage in nature

Growing up in Alaska, you learn to quickly spot the camouflaged in nature, whether it's a moose in the brush, salmon in the stream, or edibles in the thick brush. I've been playing with this a bit, starting with an acrylic pour, adding the camouflaged nature, and topping with a splash resin finish for the wet look that has become a favorite of mine. Here are new pieces now available at Mythos Gallery or online at Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TMDerrickson

A little spring walk

I don't know if it is Portland, St. Johns, or if it is the stay at home order, but even a short walk around the block (with a mask of course), brings encounters with the loveliest people out on their porches, just saying hi, giving their best wishes... it seems like all are up for an across-the-lawn chat. Sometimes on these walks I feel like I live in Mayberry...
